When Should You See a Doctor about Dental Abscesses?

If someone thinks he or she has an abscess, call the dentist. If someone has obvious signs or symptoms and is unable to reach the dentist, go to the hospital or hospital emergency department for assessment, especially if you feel unwell.
If the infection becomes so painful that it cannot be managed with over-the-counter drugs, see a doctor or dentist right away. Drainage may be required. If someone has fever, chills, nausea or vomiting due to tooth abscess, see a doctor.
If the patient has unbearable pain, difficulty breathing or difficulty swallowing, any symptoms of tooth abscess or unable to contact a doctor or dentist during off hours, go to the hospital emergency room for assessment and treatment. By seeking treatment before the symptoms progress to the present stage, emergency visits can be avoided.
