Why Do I Need X-Rays?

Radiographs or X-rays provide your dentist with an important tool that shows the condition of your teeth, the position of the root, the jaw, and the overall composition of the facial skeleton. X-rays can help dentists determine the presence or degree of periodontal (gingival) disease, abscesses, and many abnormal growths such as cysts and tumors. X-rays can also show the exact location of affected and unworn teeth. They can use visual inspections to determine the location of the wormhole and other signs of illness that may not be detectable.
Your radiography schedule is based on your dentist's assessment of your individual needs, including whether you are a new or a follow-up patient, an adult, or a child. In most cases, new patients will need a full set of oral X-rays to evaluate oral health conditions, including any potential signs of gum disease, and future comparisons. Subsequent patients may need X-rays to monitor their gum condition or tooth decay.
