How can I prepare for a visit to my dentist?

Take precautions. Talk to your doctor and dentist about how to take care of your blood sugar during dental work.

You may be taking a diabetes medication that can cause low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia. If you take insulin or other diabetes medication, please eat and eat as usual before going to the dentist. You may need to bring your diabetes medications and snacks or meals to a dentist's office.

If your blood glucose is not properly controlled, you may need to postpone any non-urgent dental work.

If you are nervous about visiting the dentist, tell the dentist and staff how you feel. Your dentist can adjust the treatment plan according to your needs. Don't let your nerves stop you from checking regularly. Waiting too long to take care of your mouth may make things worse.
