The National Institutes of Health estimates that 5% to 10% of Americans suffer from TMD or affect jaw joints and/or muscle problems. Your temporomandibular joint is where the skull connects your jaw. To feel these joints, place your fingers in front of your ears and open your mouth. The muscles on both sides of the head and face control the motion of the joints. Researchers believe that because of hormone levels, women between the ages of 20 and 40 may be more likely to have TMD.
