Are there any side effects?

Yes, they can vary depending on the type of flushing. Frequent use of antiseptic mouthwash containing high levels of alcohol (18% to 26%) may cause a burning sensation in the cheeks, teeth and gums. Many mouthwashes containing more concentrated formulas can cause mouth ulcers, sodium retention, root sensation, pigmentation, soreness, numbness, taste changes and painful mucosal erosion. Most anti-cavitation rinses contain sodium fluoride, which can cause fluoride toxicity if it is overaged or swallowed. Because children tend to swallow mouthwash accidentally, they should only use mouthwash under adult supervision. If you experience any irritation or side effects from mouth rinsing, stop using it immediately and talk to your dentist.
