How do I know if I am experiencing a side effect?

Some patients are allergic to certain drugs and may experience mild irritations such as rashes and more serious problems such as side effects such as dyspnea. Fortunately, less than 5% of allergic reactions are life-threatening. Anaphylaxis is the result of an overreaction by the body's immune system that conflicts with what people think of as foreign matter.

Not all of the side effects are allergic and can occur regardless of your body's treatment of them. Overall, these side effects are rare and expected by drug manufacturers. Depending on the medication, some side effects may include nausea, drowsiness or headaches. Your dentist may be able to reduce the dosage or change the formulation of the medication to reduce or eliminate these side effects. It is important to discuss side effects with your dentist or pharmacist to determine if you have an allergic reaction. Do not stop using the medicine without talking to the dentist. This may prolong the healing process.
