After tooth extraction, a blood cloth is formed at the lower jaw of the previous tooth. This blood cloth is the first stage of healing after extraction. Any suction in the mouth will make the blood cloth fall off and lead to slow healing, even producing a painful condition called dry nest.
It is recommended that you do not use straws for drinking within three days of tooth extraction, as this is the peak time for outlet drying. During these three days it is not advisable to have any suction in the mouth, including spitting, especially smoking.
