Once the tooth infection occurs, there is no home remedy, but it can control the symptoms of discomfort and swelling.
People with tooth decay or toothache can take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Advil or Aleve as needed to relieve pain and inflammation. As an alternative to NSAIDs or in addition to NSAIDs, acetaminophen (Tylenol) can also be used. These drugs may help pain, but they will not treat the infection. Follow-up with healthcare professionals at any time.
If the abscess itself breaks, a warm water rinse will help clean the mouth and encourage drainage. Even so, follow-up visits to the dentist are also important.
Infectious swelling associated with tooth abscesses is not the same as inflammatory swelling and the application of ice or cold in this area is not recommended.
