There are two main types of sleep apnea, both of which can severely disrupt the normal sleep cycle:
Obstructive apnea: When you sleep, the muscles on the wall of your throat relax to the point where the airway collapses and prevent air from flowing into your nose and mouth but continue to breathe. This is the most common type of apnea.
Central apnea: Breathing disruptions during sleep are caused by problems in the brain that control breathing.
