The blood of diabetics contains too much glucose, also known as sugar, and can cause pain, infections, and other problems in your mouth. Your mouth contains
Your teeth
Your gums
Your chin
Your tongue, the roof and bottom of your mouth, and the internal organization of your cheeks
Glucose is present in your saliva - the fluid in the mouth moistens it. When diabetes is not controlled, high glucose levels in saliva contribute to the growth of harmful bacteria. These bacteria combine with food to form a soft, sticky film called plaque. Plaques also come from eating foods that contain sugar or starch. Certain types of plaque can cause tooth decay or tooth decay. Other types of plaques cause gum disease and bad breath.
If you have diabetes, gum disease may be more serious and take longer to heal. In turn, gum disease can make your blood sugar difficult to control.
