Gingivitis. Most people do not realize how important it is to care for gums. Gingivitis is caused by bacteria found in dental plaque and attacks the gums. The symptoms of gingivitis include red swollen gums and bleeding when brushing your teeth. If you have any of these symptoms, see your dentist right away. If the problem persists, gingivitis can lead to periodontal (gingival) disease. Most adults show signs of gum disease Severe gum disease affects about 25% of children 65-74 years old. In gum disease, gums begin to recede and are pulled out of the teeth. In the worst case, bacteria form pockets between the teeth and gums, weakening the bones. If left untreated, all of this can lead to tooth loss, especially in patients with osteoporosis.
