Most oral inflammation is caused by an oral injury. Common examples include:
Burns
Cheek, tongue or lip bite
Cut from crunchy food
Sickness caused by improper fitting of dentures
Allergic reactions to a toothpaste or mouthwash and infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi can also cause oral inflammation. Inflammation may even be a sign of cancer or other diseases.
In some cases, diseases or treatments that are not directly related to the oral cavity may have side effects, including oral inflammation or ulcers. Some of the known things that may cause inflammation include chemotherapy and radiation therapy, autoimmune diseases, vitamin or nutritional deficiencies, leukemia, AIDS, and sexually transmitted diseases.
