What Causes a Toothache?

Although rot is often considered to be the main cause of toothache, it is important to have a complete oral examination to determine the cause. Other tooth causes of toothache include: infections, gum disease, bruxism (dentine bruises), dental trauma and abnormal bites. Eruption of teeth may be the cause of pain in the teeth or jaw of infants and school-age children.

TMJ, sinus or ear infections and facial muscle tension can cause discomfort like toothache, but these health problems are often accompanied by headaches. The pain around the teeth and jaw may be a symptom of heart disease such as angina. If your dentist suspects that a medical condition may be the cause of a toothache, he or she may refer you to a doctor.
