Research shows that they can get the nutrients they need by eating the right amount of fruits, vegetables, grains and beans.
"Vegetarian adults over long periods of time increase the risk of periodontal (gingival) disease due to the lack of vitamin D and calcium," said Dr. Leibsohn.
Dr. Leibsohn recommends that anyone considering vegetarian diet can consult a dentist or nutritionist about alternative foods to get all the nutrients they need. He also recommends taking multivitamins daily.
When vitamin D is deficient, the teeth soften and become more prone to decay and periodontal disease. Vitamin D is produced in the body under sun exposure, so deficiency is rare but can occur in those who do not drink milk or fish. Adding vegetable margarine or soy milk to your diet can solve the problem.
