Discoid/cleoid-Trimming excess enamel from preparations, carving fillings
Scaler-Used to scale (clean) teeth-There are differently angled tips for different areas of the mouth
Curette-Some are used for root planing (scaling sub-gingivally), some are used to scoop out decay from cavity preparations
Endo instruments-Include K-files, (clean and shape coronal 1/3 of root canal), rotary files (clean and shape the apical 2/3 of root canals) size verifiers (measure width of prepared canal), apical gauge (measure diameter of apex)...These are about two inches long, thin and fluted like a really fine screw. There are different diameters and different tapers used depending on the size of the canals
Mirror-Pretty self-explanatory
Hatchet, hoe and chisel-Used for trimming excess enamel, smoothing preparations, etc-These are all basically instruments with a thin, flat, bevelled edge. The difference is the angle at which the end meets the handle. Chisel is straight up (picture a hand with fingers pointing upward), hoe points forward, and hatchet points to the side at 90 degrees
Gingival margin trimmer-Used to trim excess enamel interproximally (between teeth), bevels proximal boxes in class 2 preparations
Gold knife-Shapes and trims fillings
Amalgam plugger-kind of like a syringe that picks up amalgam from the dappen dish and carries it to the tooth
Condensers-Used to pack amalgam and sometimes other fillings into teeth (spatulas are used with resins)
