When eating, the fixer or detachable orthodontic appliance (not fixed to the teeth) must always be removed. These instruments are used to keep the teeth aligned, but unlike dentures, they cannot be eaten with them. It must be worn almost all the time except when eating or playing sports.
It is important to remember that retainers and orthotics also retain plaque and food particles after meals. Therefore, it is very important that you thoroughly brush your teeth and floss them before you wear them after you have finished eating.
This advice also applies to any detachable appliance, including mouthguards and splints (you must wear an oral guard when you exercise).
