When you hear (or read in this case) the word abscess, everyone can think of pain! Although the abscess does not cause pain, it sometimes becomes a very painful experience!
A tooth abscess is an infection caused by bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. It can come from the tooth itself, it can also come from the gums around the teeth. Either way, the infection must first be treated with drainage or antibiotics.
If the infection originates from the tooth itself, the main reason may be tooth decay, a fracture or trauma that may have occurred on the tooth recently or several years ago. If the tooth can be fixed, it first needs a root canal to remove all the stimulated tissue in the pulp (the center of the tooth where the nerve is located). The tooth may need a crown later. However, if the cavity is too large or the abscess fracture is too deep, the dentist may recommend removing the tooth.
If the abscess is from a gum, the infection should be controlled around the area. Gum disease is mainly caused by bacteria that have plaque and tartar left in the entire tooth for a long time. After antibiotic treatment, you may need deep-root cleansing or gum surgery to remove all infections in your gums.
Urgent care for oral abscesses. If left untreated, the infection may reach other parts of the body and cause serious illness in other organs, including the heart.
