How to finish and polish a common composite restoration

The use of the Komet Q-Finishers® and CompoBriteTM polishers allows for quick and efficient finishing and polishing of composite restorations, saving time and multiple dental equipment changes while giving the composite surface a brilliant, high-gloss finish.

Although no two composite repair procedures are identical, in most cases, some daily dressing and polishing applications can be used.

Program efficiency and aesthetics are the main goals of these technologies, and they will be a valuable part of good dentistry when used in conjunction with predictability and reliability.

Proper tooth preparation is the basis of beautiful composite restorations. Komet inlays/inlaid drills (eg 845KR.FG.025 and 845KR.FG.018) provide the ideal choice from simple occlusal preparation to multi-surface preparation, even with axial and meibranous floors and horizontal boxes. Seamless placement of composite filler material. These drills can be used after removing dental caries with 5835.FG.012 cemented carbide and removing the amalgam.

Used together, the Q-finishing machine® and CompoBriteTM polishing finish and polish composite resin repairs quickly and efficiently, saving time and a variety of instrument changes while giving brilliant shine to highly-composite surfaces. Once the proper anatomy has been established using Q-Finishers, a pale pink CompoBrite polisher is used for pre-polishing, followed by a light yellow polisher to create a natural, high-gloss, glossy finish. The polishing machine has a disc, cup and flame shape that can easily access all tooth surfaces.

The following examples show the finishing and polishing of conventional composite restorations using Komet's Q-Finishers and CompoBrite polishing machines.

case

1. Place a rubber dam to provide proper isolation and promote a clean work place.

2. Use 5835.FG.012, then use 845KR.FG.012. Note: The cleaner the lines, the easier it is to achieve aesthetic and functional goals.

3. If cavity preparation is required, a matrix system can be used to prevent open edges and close contact. Matrix options range from traditional Tofflemire to newer partition systems such as Palodent® Plus (DENTSPLY). Note: Using the appropriate matrix helps prevent open boundaries and close proximal contact.

4. Once the matrix is in place, disinfect the surface with chlorhexidine wipe before bonding.

5. Place an etchant and then bond the resin.

6. Place a layer of flowable composite material, such as TetricEvoFlow® (Ivoclar), and apply a condensable composite such as TetricEvoCeram® (Ivoclar). Note: Stratified flow composites facilitate full coverage of single-sided and multi-faced fillers. In addition, the conservative use of materials in conjunction with the respect of natural tooth contours can improve the efficiency of finishing and polishing processes.

7. Use hand instruments to carve the composite material into a proper tooth anatomy.

8. Use Komet USA's Q-Finisher® Kit to begin the procedure to establish the correct tooth anatomy. Initial decompression before removing the dam.

9. Remove the rubber dam, use an articulated paper to emphasize the occlusal contacts, and use a football-shaped H379Q.FG.018 dental drill for occlusion repair.

10. Once the proper occlusion relationship between the intercuspal position (ICP or centric) and eccentric occlusion is established, use H48LQ.FG.012 to model the detailed anatomy.

11. For a natural-looking sensory polish, use the two-step CompoBrite system.

The pink polisher is followed by a yellow polisher for better aesthetics.

13. The final restoration reflects the ideal form and natural finish.

Today's dentistry offers a wide range of technologies and dental supplies to meet the needs of each dental care provider and patient. Good dentistry depends on a variety of factors, including operator comfort for a particular system or technology, instrument reliability, patient comfort and satisfaction, and predictable results. As we continue to strive to become experts in efficiency and quality, and provide our patients with the best services and care, instrument systems such as the Q-Finishers and the CompoBrite Polisher provide a valuable complement to dental good practices.
