What Is Oral Thrush?

Oral thrush (oropharyngeal candidiasis) is a surface yeast infection that may involve the tongue, inner cheek (buccal mucosa), inner lip area, and occasional gums (gingival). Although this condition is most common in infants and young children, thrush may affect young children, and to a lesser extent, older children and occasionally adults. The diagnosis of thrush in older children, adolescents and any adult should always lead to the search for potential medical conditions (diabetes, use of immunosuppressive therapy, etc.).
