I Use That: Cavitron Ultrasonic Scaling Systems

Pat Martin of RDH used an ultrasound scanner for more than 30 years in her dental career. Most of the time she works at Dr. Andrew Inge's Pennsylvania office and relies on Cavitron® from Dentsparenton Ultrasonic scaling system.

Cavitron zooming system offers many benefits to her and her patients.

What hygienist Pat Martin said about the benefits of Cavitron and ultrasound scaling

In my career, I have seen many changes in the way we practice oral hygiene. One of the biggest advances is the conventional implementation of ultrasound scaling. As a graduate of the Dental Health Institute in the 1980s, I spent a long time accepting the idea of using ultrasound regularly. We are taught that this is the only way to "foul" fouling, and the only way to use manual dental equipments for efficient fouling and rooting. The insert is large, the unit is not easy to access.

Fortunately, thanks to advances in science, technology and design, we now know the many benefits of ultrasound instruments. Ultrasonic cavitation can destroy bacterial biofilms more efficiently than manual scaling.

Most of my career I rely on the Cavitron system and find them extremely reliable. The Cavitron system I currently use has a dual selection option for drug delivery that can be used for irrigation during the fouling process. I tried other brands, and there are some differences. The system also includes several unique ergonomic improvements for hygienists. For example, lightweight mobile phone cables are designed to reduce the strain on my wrists so that I can continue working for years. There is also a Tap-On wireless foot switch that opens the system with a single foot.

Cavitron also offers many benefits to my patients. They spend less time in their chairs listening to the sound of stones and stains being removed. Patients like how fast they can feel this difference, especially in the lower frontal area. The use of ultrasound produces less trauma to the tissue and the tooth structure; the pressure exerted on the patient's lower jaw is also less due to the lighter grip. Patients presenting implants, for example, spend time safely cleaning with a dedicated implant insert.

It is very important for me to know if my patients are comfortable during their health visits. Not only do I want my patients to look forward to their health appointment, but I hope they leave a good experience. This tends to increase their adherence to treatment recommendations and make them more likely to return to their next appointment.

Ultrasound scanning with the Cavitron system can make the patient's treatment time more effective. Hygienists no longer "just clean their teeth." The role of a hygienist has evolved into a major oral care provider. Blood pressure screening for each appointment, risk assessment of caries and periodontal disease, and a comprehensive medical history review are just a few of the many assessments.

In addition, the ultrasound blades I use have changed dramatically over the years. Earlier in my career, we basically had two - one wide flat insert and one "universal" insert. We now know that more than one inset is needed to achieve effective results. Older generation inserts are primarily used to remove severe supragingival calculus. Fortunately, the designs have changed, with thinner and more curved designs allowing deeper pockets to be used for calculus and biofilm rupture. Cavitron dental supplies system has completed this change.

It is important to use different inserts to get different deposit levels. I use a thicker blade to remove moderate to severe deposits and follow the slender blade. I also prefer FitGrip ™ ultrasonic blade design.

Cavitron has been extremely reliable over the years and for me the Cavitron zooming system is the most important zooming unit.

Dr. Andrew Inge comments on Cavitron

I have three observations about the Cavitron zooming system. First, they do a good job. Second, our patients love them. People who have not cleaned their teeth for a long time, and patients with heavy calculus, often wonder how easy it is to become. Third, when I was a patient, I personally liked them. I may be just one of the few dentists who does not like to clean their teeth and I really appreciate the gentle and good results Cavitron's zooming system offers.
