What does periodontal treatment involve?

In the early stages of gum disease, most treatments include special cleaning called scaling and root planning, which removes plaque and tartar around teeth and smoothes the root surface. Antibiotics or antimicrobials can be used to supplement scaling and rooting. In most cases of early gum disease, known as gingivitis, scaling and root surface formation, and proper daily cleaning achieve satisfactory results. More advanced cases may require surgical treatment, including incising the gums - sometimes with laser assistance - removing hardened plaque and repairing the damaged bone. The program is also designed to smooth the root surface and reposition the gum tissue for easier cleaning.
