Fluoride directly on the teeth. It is found in products that contain high levels of fluoride to prevent tooth decay, such as toothpaste and mouthwash. Then spit or wash these products out of their mouths without swallowing. Dentists recommend using fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth at least twice daily or after each meal, in combination with dental floss and regular dental exams.
Topical applications of topical fluoride, such as gels or varnishes, are administered by the dentist professionally and are typically maintained for about four minutes during the cleaning process. For patients at higher risk of tooth decay, the dentist may open a special daily household gel that can be used with or without a tray for up to six weeks.
