The incidence of mercury allergy is well below one percent of the population. Persons suspected of being allergic to mercury should be tested by a qualified physician and, if necessary, be given an appropriate alternative. Should the patient remove the amalgam? Not required, doing so can result in unnecessary costs and potential damage to the teeth.
