How should I handle a chipped or fractured tooth?

There are different types of dental fractures. Chopped teeth are minor fractures. Moderate fractures include damage to enamel, tissue and / or pulp. A serious fracture usually means that a tooth has been traumatized and can not be recovered.

If your teeth break, rinse your mouth with warm water and use an ice pack or cold pack to relieve swelling. Take ibuprofen, not aspirin, for pain. Your dentist can smooth minor fractures with a sandpaper smoothing agent. In addition, the fix may require restoration of the teeth.

If you wear dentures, broken teeth or shards, wear your spare denture until you can visit your dentist. If you do not have a replacement kit or can not get to your dentist's office soon, use cyanoacrylate (heavy duty, fast-drying "super" glue) to hold your teeth or teeth in place. Remember, this is an interim measure until your dentist can properly repair your teeth and can only be used for dentures! Do not try to stick natural teeth or a part of natural teeth in place!
