Cold sores, also known as hot blisters, are small, clear, fluid-filled blisters formed around the mouth and caused by herpes simplex virus (usually type 1, or HSV-1). Cold sores usually do not last more than two weeks. However, sores are contagious and tend to relapse when they are reactivated due to triggers such as stress, sun, fever or illness.
