Burns syndrome (BMS) is a common but complex problem that causes patients to experience burns or scalds on their lips and tongue (and sometimes even the entire mouth). Often there is no obvious sign of irritation, and the etiology of the syndrome can be caused by a variety of factors, from menopause to mental dysfunction to vitamin deficiency. BMS can affect as many as 5% of Americans, usually in people over the age of 60.

Although both men and women are BMS sensitive, they are more common in older women (18% -33% of postmenopausal women have an estimated BMS). This syndrome is also called tongue pain (tongue pain) and bad breath (mouth pain). BMS is not a form of cancer that does not cause it.
