Unnecessary. Periodontitis is caused by some forms of gingivitis, but untreated gingivitis does not always lead to periodontitis. Once developed, however, gingivitis may last a lifetime. Treating gingivitis can reduce the risk of developing more serious gum disease.
Practice good oral hygiene. Keeping the mouth clean by controlling plaque buildup is essential to reverse and control gingivitis. Clean your toothbrush and floss thoroughly for at least 2 minutes. Use dental floss before brushing your teeth to remove loose food particles and bacteria.
Look at your dentist. Follow the recommended routine of cleaning and checking, and often go to the dentist.
Eat a healthy diet. Eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C, an antioxidant, is essential for healthy gums. Food is a good source of vitamin C, including citrus fruits, berries, cantaloupes, broccoli and spinach. In addition, calcium is crucial for bone health (including dental bones), and many experts recommend getting 1,200 milligrams to 1,500 mg of minerals a day.
