My first semester of hygiene school, we had to purchase two of the basic dental kits which included your basic explorers, curets, probes, and mirror. The two kits were about 1600, and this semester we had to purchase our ultrasonic scaler which was about 1200, and I know that next year we have to purchase perio instruments which will be about 500 or so. And there are so many additional things that have to be purchased so just be prepared ahead of time! It will all be worth it in the end! I love it.
