I happened to buy a nikon 5400, which I originally bought for oral photography. It's not bad. The only problem I have is that unless you actually use the "P" mode and macro Settings, you can use the flash to blow the image out to keep the distance from the topic. You may need to compensate for -0.7 to 1.0 by setting the EV[+ / -] control. Once you find your preference, stick to it. I found $5,400 (using) on eBay, in the $200 range, including memory CARDS, so it wasn't a bad start.
5400 has been replaced by 8,400, even though it is already quite a lot on the market. I think the current Coolpix P4 is probably their closest model, and if I buy it today, I'll look at that one.
I am now using the 60mm nikon macro lens d70. I'm just using the flash, I'm going to turn the EV to -0.7, and I'm very happy with the results. It's a little more expensive than P4, but at least I know I can recommend it. You can make room for the new D80 in the exhibition hall when Nikon closes its 70s.
