Keep it clean (and send the right message)

From the patient's point of view, your operation lighting may be a reflection of your dental quality. While there is no direct correlation, when the patient sees a striped and cracked lens shield or mirror, they may think that your dental quality is not high. Keeping the lens cover and reflector clean and good will send the correct information.
Here are some ways to make your operating light look good and function properly.
Almost all of the halogen operating lamps have a protective plastic lens hood. The shield protects the patient in the unlikely event of a light bulb explosion. It also protects optical lens coatings from hand sprays and spray disinfectants. When you use a surface disinfectant on a shield, clear plastic cracks and cracks with the chemicals. Since the shield surface is usually not a source of cross-contamination, consider using plastic cleaners instead of disinfectants to clean shields. Your dental supplies distributor may offer an optical plastic cleaner. If not, try an organic glass cleaner at auto parts or ocean stores. Novus offers some great optical plastic cleansers that work well on light shields.

Light handles and light switches are the main source of cross-contamination, and are usually made from materials designed to fight bad disinfectants. These surfaces should be disinfected between the patient or covered with barrier bags. If you feel compelled to disinfect shields, plastic will look better, and if you wipe any disinfectant with a plastic cleanser after disinfection, it will last longer.
Because shields are usually made of soft plastic and easy to scratch, use soft cotton or microfiber cloth when cleaning. Wiping shields with paper towels can damage the plastic surface, and it's easy to see scratches on the light.
At least once a week, remove the shields and wash them with mild soap and water. Dry the shield with soft cotton or microfiber cloth.
Even the best care, the lens shield eventually needs to be replaced. The good news is that shields are not usually cheap and easy to replace.
Halogen lamps, on the other hand, are expensive to replace glass lenses. The lenses do not require regular cleaning due to the protective lens of the plastic shield. When cleaning the lenses, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. If not cleaned properly, you may inadvertently remove the delicate optical coating that affects the quality and quantity of light.
Many of the new technology's LED lights have a replaceable transparent plastic shell or cheap to replace reflective surfaces. After proper cleaning, they should last a few years.
When lens shields and reflective surfaces no longer account for the quality of your dentist, make sure you don't send the wrong message to the patient.
